As we continue in the liturgical season of “Ordinary Time” in September, we will consider scriptures from the Gospel of Matthew and the letters of Paul. We contemplate two of Jesus’ parables, one about the power and re- sponsibility of forgiveness and the other about jealousy and the overwhelming power of God’s grace. From the Letter to the Romans, we learn about the only debt Paul thinks a Christian should carry: the debt of love. And from the Letter to the Philippians, we sing of the oldest surviving Christian writings, an ancient hymn about how Jesus’s empties himself of divine glory in order to become one of us….
