We begin June with one of the three greatest cele- brations in the Christian year. Christmas cele- brates the birth of Jesus; Easter celebrates his resurrec- tion. Now the feast of Pentecost, the capstone of the Easter season, celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church. In particular, this Sunday we will consider the hospitality offered by the Holy Spirit by addressing each person in their own native language.
Next, we move to the celebration of Trinity Sunday. We turn to the Book of Proverbs, which describes a being, the first born of all creation, who works alongside God as a master builder, taking part in every part of creation. Her name is Sophia: Wisdom. Who is this figure, and how does she relate to the Triune God?
Then we find Elijah, toward the end of his career, disil- lusioned with being a prophet, he is ready to die. But God visits him and strengthens him for the journey ahead.
